A Courageous Act

I Am Mardaani

It was a usual day and she was traveling via Metro (Delhi) to meet up a friend of hers. As usual, it was crowded with more people than it should accommodate at a time. You can’t really do anything about the population outburst. She was standing on the gate itself as she had to de-board at the next station. The metro came to a halt and as soon as the gates opened, there was a sudden rush of people pulling almost everybody outside the gates.

She made her way out as well but the moment she stepped out, she felt a hand on her handbag. She looked back and found that a guy had opened the zip of her bag and was trying to take out her purse. The moment she laid her eyes on him, he showed him a pocket knife threatening her. This all happened so quick and so unexpectedly and no one else was aware of the fact.

She gathered all her courage and slapped him hard on his face. The guy was baffled. She jolted another slap on his face before he could realize what had happened. Now, a few people noticed what was happening. But they kept looking at what was happening. She kept slapping him till the guy was on the floor. Next, she removed one of her sandals and hit the guy with it. She was on a rage that she was not familiar with. While all this happened, several people clustered around but nobody spoke anything.

The guy was now covering his face in shame. She turned around and went near the people who were just looking and did not even bother to intervene for help or call the guards. “Chudiyan pehen lo apne hathon me”, she blurted out in rage at the men. “If you can’t help other girls in the time of need how can you expect help when you need it”, she shouted at the girls.

At that moment, the guards arrived. To avoid all the unnecessary questions, she rushed out of the platform. For some reason, she was glad and the rage suddenly turned into a faint courageous smile.

She is none other than my own sister Aakriti Rawat. She told me about her experience and I was shocked to hear that. What if that guy had cut her and fled with the crowd? This has happened with a male friend of mine and he had to get his hand stitched up to recover with the wound. But then, I felt proud that she stood for herself and became an example for all those people who were there on the platform.

She is trained in martial arts and guess that paid off well at that particular moment.

Yeah. I have myself heard so many stories when no one from the public came for any help and we read these type of cases all around in the news. I don't know when people will come forward to help their own kind.

Yup I do preach the training of self defense to all the girls. It really gives you an advantage in many cases.

Wow! It was risky but quite brave of her. Most people just lose themselves in the moment. You must be proud.
Hats off :) Huge Applause. Do pass on the message :)

Yeah that is what I said to her. It was quite risky. But in today's world you have to stand up for yourself or you will always be the sufferer. Yeah I am :) And I will do.
